EMPG – Emerging Market Global Players

The Vale Columbia Center on Sustainable International Investment (VCC) has been pursuing an initiative known as the Emerging Market Global Players (EMGP) Project for the past several years. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has been deeply analysed in economic literature for a long time. The experience of the past shows that FDI predominantly flows from developed countries to less developed countries, but over the past two decades the role of emerging economies is more and more significant. The volume of FDI has grown rapidly and became enormous not just in absolute numbers, but in proportion as well. These facts of economic life were well-known, therefore some would claim that there is nothing new process under the FDI scene. However, as far as the developing countries concerned the emergence of substantial outward FDI from developing countries by multinational enterprises (MNEs) is observable (OFDI from emerging markets was estimated at USD 332 billion in 2008, six times as much as the total world flows – USD 56 billion − a quarter century ago).

ICEG European Center as a Hungarian research partner of Columbia University is interested in the contribution to the better understanding of the new phenomenon.
